The Flowering Homburg is a fantasy about a young boy, Fletcher Whittaker, who gets lost on his father’s birthday. He finds himself at the ‘Random Hat Shop’, an abandoned store in a long-deserted part of town. Fletcher is welcomed by a benign and mysterious haberdasher named, Johannes Leewald.
Johannes suggests a magical hat, the Homburg, as a gift for his father. Fletcher gives the hat to his father Walter, but he is skeptical the hat will flower. When, without explanation, it mysteriously does, Walter seizes on the opportunity to use the hat to try and get his job back at Burrows Industries, a cut-throat, a world-wide, children’s novelty company, where he has very recently been fired.
What follows, the effect the Homburg has on Fletcher, his father, indeed anyone who tries it on, is well,
